The player
Joseph Yominao Jnr has been building his squash foundation at Port Moresby Racquets Club since the age of ten. His first club title came at the 2022 POMRC Open, where he won the Mixed U11 division in a tournament that brought together players from young juniors through to senior club competitors.
Four years later, Joseph continues to train out of the same club under the guidance of his father and coach, Joe Yominao Snr. In 2026 he won two POMRC Open squash titles in a single season — the Boys U18 title and the B Open title — showing his ability to compete above his age group and against stronger, more experienced players.
His development has also moved beyond Papua New Guinea. In 2025 he was one of the POMRC juniors put forward for Queensland Junior Championship selection, and later made his overseas competition debut at the Cairns Juniors in Far North Queensland. In 2026 he continued that regional growth by placing 3rd at the Queensland Junior Squash Championships in the U15 Boys division.
As a player, Joseph is still developing, but his pathway is clear. He is focused on improving his technical consistency, court movement, match discipline, fitness and exposure to higher-level competition. His progress reflects the commitment required of a young PNG athlete working to move from local club success into Oceania, Australian and wider Asia-Pacific junior squash.
Off court, Joseph continues to balance school, family life, training and tournament preparation. With the right support, he has the opportunity to keep building as one of Papua New Guinea's promising next-generation squash athletes.
